Club Atlético Peñarol
Club Atlético Peñarol is the most successful club in Uruguay and one of the largest in South America. Founded in 1891, the club has accumulated five Copa Libertadores titles and three world titles, being considered one of the most successful clubs in the history of continental football.
History
Founded in 1891 as Central Uruguay Railway Cricket Club, Peñarol won five Copa Libertadores titles (1960, 1961, 1966, 1982 and 1987) and three Intercontinental Cups, becoming the most decorated club in Uruguay. With dozens of Uruguayan Championship titles, the club dominated national football for decades. Its rivalry with Nacional is considered one of the most intense in the world and draws crowds to each edition of the Clásico.
