Petrolina Social Football Club is the leading football club in the city of Petrolina, located in the interior of Pernambuco, in the region of São Francisco Sertão. Founded in 1998, it is renowned for its passionate fan base and for its jaguar-shaped mascot, which gave rise to the club's nickname.

History

Petrolina Social Football Club was founded on November 11, 1998, in the city of Petrolina, in the interior of Pernambuco, on the banks of the São Francisco River. The club was established with the aim of competitively representing the Sertão region of Pernambuco, which had little visibility in the state's professional football at that time. Already in its second year of operation, in 1999, the club began competing in the Second Division of the Pernambuco Championship (Series A2). In 2001, it won the title of the access division, securing promotion to the elite of Pernambuco football, Series A1, in which it made its debut in 2002. Throughout the 2000s, Petrolina established itself as one of the main forces in the interior of Pernambuco, creating remarkable regional rivalries with 1º de Maio Sports Club, Salgueiro Athletic Club, and Araripina Football Club. The club plays its home matches at Paulo Coelho Stadium, which has a capacity of approximately 5,000 supporters. Known as 'Fera Sertaneja' (Sertão Beast), Petrolina remains a reference in the football of Pernambuco's interior, alternating between participations in Series A1 and Series A2 of the state championship and also competing in national promotion competitions.
