Plymouth Argyle Football Club
Plymouth Argyle is a traditional club from southwest England, founded in 1886 and known by the nickname 'The Pilgrims'. It holds the record for the most titles in the English third division, but has never competed in the elite of national football.
History
Formed in 1886 as Argyle Football Club, the club turned professional in 1903 and started playing at Home Park from 1901, a stadium it still occupies today. The nickname 'The Pilgrims' refers to the pilgrims who departed from the port of Plymouth aboard the Mayflower bound for America in 1620. Plymouth Argyle holds the record of five Third Division championships in English football: Third Division South in 1929-30 and 1951-52, and League One (formerly Third Division) in 1958-59, 2003-04 and 2022-23. Despite these campaigns, the club has never reached the English first division, often remembered as one of the most traditional teams to never have competed in the national elite. Currently the club competes in the lower divisions of the Football League, maintaining strong support from fans in southwest England, a region isolated from the major football centers of England.
