Founded on September 28, 1893 by António Nicolau d'Almeida, FC Porto took several decades to establish itself as a major power in Portuguese football. From the 1970s and 1980s onwards, under the presidency of Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa, the club entered its era of greatest hegemony. The major turning point in Porto's history came with José Mourinho. In 2003, the club won the UEFA Cup and, in 2004, achieved the extraordinary feat of winning the UEFA Champions League, defeating Monaco in the final in Gelsenkirchen. It was one of the greatest achievements in European football for a Portuguese club. The Estádio do Dragão, inaugurated in 2003 for Euro 2004, became a symbol of Portuguese football. With a capacity for over 50,000 fans, it is considered one of the most modern stadiums in Europe. Porto is recognized worldwide for its ability to reveal and develop talents. Players like Deco, Hulk, Radamel Falcao, James Rodríguez and several others made memorable passages through the club before transferring to the biggest European clubs.
