Portuguesa 1952-1955

The Portuguesa of the early 1950s was one of the strongest teams in São Paulo football and won the Rio-São Paulo Tournament in 1952 and 1955. The squad featured right-back Djalma Santos, future World Cup champion with the Brazilian National Team.

History

The Associação Portuguesa de Desportos was founded on August 14, 1920, in the São Paulo capital, by members of the Portuguese community. Over the following decades, the club established itself among the main names of the São Paulo Championship and built a loyal fan base, who came to call it Lusa. In the early 1950s, before the creation of national championships, the Rio-São Paulo Tournament was one of the country's most important competitions, as it brought together the great clubs from the two largest centers of Brazilian football. In 1952, Portuguesa won this tournament and, in 1955, repeated the feat, making the period one of the most victorious phases in its history. Right-back Djalma Santos played for Portuguesa between 1952 and 1959, before transferring to Palmeiras. Wearing the Brazilian National Team shirt, he was World Cup champion in 1958 and 1962, which helps explain the sporting importance of that generation of Lusa.
