Portuguesa 1973
The 1973 Portuguesa was the champion of São Paulo in one of the most famous episodes in Brazilian football: the title shared with Santos, after an error by referee Armando Marques in the penalty shootout of the final.
History
The 1973 São Paulo Championship was disputed in two rounds. Santos won the first and Portuguesa won the second, which led the two clubs to the final. In the overall campaign, Lusa finished in second place in the table with 29 points in 23 matches, with nine wins, eleven draws and three losses, 26 goals scored and 15 conceded. The final was held on August 26, 1973, at the Morumbi, and ended 0-0 after extra time. The decision went to penalties. For Santos, Carlos Alberto and Edu converted, and Zé Carlos wasted his. For Portuguesa, Isidoro, Calegari and Wilsinho missed their shots. Referee Armando Marques miscounted the shots and ended the dispute when the score was 2-0 for Santos, despite Portuguesa still having two shots to take. The error was only noticed by him when filling out the match report, after Portuguese players had already left the stadium. In a meeting of about 13 minutes, the São Paulo Football Federation decided to declare both clubs champions. The Santos players came to claim a change, but the solution was maintained, with the approval of the CBD. The Lusa team was coached by Otto Glória and had Zecão in goal, as well as Enéas, Cabinho, Wilsinho and Xaxá in the attack.
