Portuguese Athletic Association (Santista)
The Associação Atlética Portuguesa (Santista) is a century-old club from Baixada Santista, founded in 1917 by Portuguese immigrants settled in Santos. It competed in several editions of the São Paulo State Championship and is one of the most traditional clubs on the São Paulo coast.
History
Founded on August 17, 1917 in the city of Santos, Portuguesa Santista was born from the initiative of Portuguese immigrants who wished to maintain their cultural identity through sport. The club quickly became one of the main forces in Santos football, rivaling teams from the region for decades. In the 1950s and 1960s, Prainha formed respectable teams that challenged clubs from the state capital in state divisions. Its red and green banner became a symbol of a community united by football and pride in their Lusitanian roots. The club participated in numerous editions of the São Paulo State Championship, transitioning between Series A and B over the decades. Despite the financial difficulties that marked football in the interior and on the coast, Portuguesa Santista maintained its structure and institutional continuity. Currently, the club continues to participate in São Paulo state divisions, being a sporting and cultural heritage of the city of Santos and Baixada Santista, representing the contribution of Portuguese descendants to Brazilian football.
