History
Racing Club de Lens was born in 1906 in the mining town of Lens, in northern France. The club became a symbol of the coal-mining region of Artois, with an identity strongly linked to miners and the blood and gold colors. The Stade Bollaert-Delelis, with capacity exceeding the population of the city itself, became one of the most intense atmospheres in European football and hosted matches of the 1998 World Cup and the 2016 Euros. The top title came in the 1997-98 season, when Lens won the French Championship, followed by the League Cup in 1999. The club also had relevant European campaigns, with participations in the Champions League and the UEFA Cup. After years of oscillation between the first and second divisions, Lens returned to the elite in 2020 and achieved the runner-up finish of Ligue 1 in 2022-23, securing a return to the Champions League.
