History

Racing Club de Strasbourg was founded in 1906 in Strasbourg, a city in Alsace that alternated between German and French rule throughout history, which gave the club a unique cultural identity in French football. The highest point of the trajectory came in the 1978-79 season, when Strasbourg won the French Championship, the only national title in its history, with a team led by Gilbert Gress. The achievement led the club to the European Cup of Champions in the following season. The club also built a strong relationship with the French Cup, a competition it won in 1951, 1966 and 2001, in addition to winning the French League Cup in 1997 and 2005. Stade de la Meinau became one of the stadiums with the most recognized atmosphere in the country. In the 2010s, Strasbourg experienced dramatic reconstruction: after financial problems that took it to amateur divisions, it returned step by step to Ligue 1, a movement accompanied by one of the largest average crowds in France outside the major centers.
