Esporte Clube Radar

Esporte Clube Radar

A club from São Paulo that holds a unique place in the history of Brazilian football: it was the first team in the country to officially register a women's football team, in 1983, shortly after the ban on the sport was lifted by the government in 1979.

History

Esporte Clube Radar was founded in São José dos Campos, in the interior of São Paulo, as an amateur association linked to local workers. Its historical significance does not come from titles, but from a pioneering milestone for the national sport. In 1979, the National Sports Council revoked the legal ban that prevented women from playing football in Brazil, which had been in effect since 1941. Radar was one of the first clubs to take advantage of the change in legislation, formalizing in 1983 the registration of a women's team with the São Paulo federation, at a time when the sport still faced strong social and institutional resistance. Radar's team competed in state competitions in the early 1980s, a period when organized women's football was still taking its first steps in the country, lacking grassroots structure, sponsorship, or significant media coverage. Over time, the club lost its sporting prominence and reduced its participation to amateur and youth competitions, but its pioneering role is frequently remembered in retrospectives about the history of Brazilian women's football, alongside other São Paulo clubs of the same generation.
