Rampla Juniors Futbol Club
One of the most traditional and oldest clubs in Uruguayan football, Rampla Juniors was national champion in 1927 and reached several finals in the early twentieth century.
History
Founded in 1914 in the Aguada neighborhood in Montevideo, Rampla Juniors quickly established itself among the prominent clubs in Uruguayan football in the first half of the twentieth century. Its nickname, 'Aristocrat', refers to the elegance with which the team played in the early years of official competitions in the country. The greatest achievement in the club's history occurred in 1927, when Rampla Juniors won the Uruguayan Championship, which was disputed that year by 20 teams, the largest number of participants in the history of the national tournament up to that point. This title remains the only Uruguayan first division championship won by the club. Besides the 1927 title, Rampla Juniors was runner-up in the Uruguayan championship in 1923, 1928, 1932, 1940, 1947 (shared with Peñarol and Defensor) and 1964, demonstrating competitive regularity for decades. The club also won complementary tournaments, such as the Torneo Competencia in 1950 and 1955 and the Torneo de Copa in 1969. Over the decades, Rampla Juniors lost strength against the major clubs in Montevideo and began to alternate seasons between the first and second divisions of Uruguayan football, however, maintaining itself as a historic and respected club in the country.
