Rapid Bucharest
Bucharest club founded in 1923 by workers from the Grivița railway workshops. It is a three-time Romanian champion and one of the most popular clubs in the capital, with headquarters in the Giulești neighborhood.
History
Rapid Bucharest was founded in 1923 under the name CFR Bucharest, emerging from a group of workers from the Grivița railway workshops in the Romanian capital. The connection with the railways gave the club the nickname of the railway workers' team and a fan base linked to working-class neighborhoods. In the 1930s and 1940s, the club dominated the Cupa României, winning the competition several times in succession before the reorganization of Romanian football in the post-war period. The name Rapid was adopted in 1945. The first national league title came in 1967. This was followed by championships in 1999 and 2003, under a generation that also competed in European competitions. In 2005-06, Rapid reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup, eliminating heavyweight European opponents and facing Steaua in an unprecedented Romanian confrontation at that stage. In the 2010s, financial problems led the club to be administratively relegated and refounded, beginning a new climb through the lower divisions until returning to the first division of Romanian football.
