SK Rapid Wien

SK Rapid Wien

SK Rapid Wien is the Austrian club with the most national titles in history, a traditional rival of Austria Wien in the greatest classic of Viennese football, the Wiener Derby.

History

Founded in 1899 in the Hutteldorf district of Vienna, Rapid Wien transformed into the most successful club in the history of Austrian football. In the early decades of the twentieth century, the team established itself as a national power, competing with Austria Wien for hegemony in the Austrian capital in the traditional Wiener Derby. The club gained international recognition by reaching the Fairs Cup final in 1960 and the European Cup Winners' Cup final in 1985, and remains one of the Austrian representatives with the greatest continental record to this day. Its supporters, among the most passionate in Austria, were known for massive support at the former Gerhard-Hanappi-Stadion, now replaced by the modern Allianz Stadion. With dozens of titles from the Austrian Championship and the Austrian Cup, Rapid Wien remains one of the most traditional institutions in Central European football, constantly developing players who transfer to leagues of greater prominence.
