History
Founded in 1906 in Strasbourg, a city that throughout history has alternated between French and German sovereignty, RC Strasbourg carries a unique cultural identity in French football. The Alsace region, with its hybrid culture, profoundly influenced the history and values of the club. The club's greatest title was the Ligue 1 championship in the 1978-79 season, when Strasbourg surprised French football with a historic campaign. Players such as Dominique Dropsy and Didier Six were fundamental in that team which brought the club's only national title. The Stade de la Meinau, the club's home since the second decade of the twentieth century, is one of the most emblematic stadiums in French football, with a capacity of around 26,000 fans. The stadium is the setting for intense atmosphere, especially in matches against regional rivals. The club went through financial difficulties in the 2010s, even being relegated to amateur divisions. However, it returned to Ligue 1 and consolidated itself again in the national scene, reaffirming its historical importance for French and Alsatian football.
