History
The 1997-98 season was led by German coach Jupp Heynckes, who assembled a squad with Raúl, Roberto Carlos, Fernando Hierro, Fernando Redondo, Clarence Seedorf, Davor Šuker, Predrag Mijatović and goalkeeper Bodo Illgner. In the Champions League knockout stage, Real Madrid eliminated Bayer Leverkusen in the quarterfinals and Borussia Dortmund, the 1997 European champions, in the semifinals. The final was played on May 20, 1998, at the Amsterdam ArenA, against Juventus. Real Madrid won 1-0, with a goal from Mijatović, and won the seventh European Cup, the first since 1966. Heynckes was dismissed at the end of the season, despite the European title. Under Guus Hiddink's command, Real Madrid also defeated Vasco 2-1 in Tokyo and won the 1998 Intercontinental Cup.
