History

Real Madrid arrived at the 1999-2000 season as the defending European champions, a title won in 1998 over Juventus. John Toshack started the year in charge of the team and was replaced by Vicente del Bosque in November 1999. In La Liga, the club finished only in fifth place, but the European Cup became the main focus of the season. In the European competition, Real Madrid passed through the two group phases and faced Manchester United in the quarter-finals, eliminating the English side 3-2 on aggregate. In the semi-final, they defeated Bayern Munich 2-0 in Madrid and lost 2-1 in Germany, advancing 3-2 on aggregate. The final was played on May 24, 2000, at the Stade de France, in Saint-Denis, on the outskirts of Paris, and was the first decision of the competition between two clubs from the same country. Real Madrid defeated Valencia, managed by Héctor Cúper, 3-0, with goals from Fernando Morientes, Steve McManaman, and Raúl. The title was the club's eighth in the European Cup. A few months later, in July 2000, Florentino Pérez assumed the presidency of Real Madrid and signed Luís Figo, marking the beginning of the Galácticos era.
