North American club from Major League Soccer, based in the Salt Lake City metropolitan region, Utah, champion of the MLS Cup in 2009.
History
Founded in 2004 as one of the MLS expansion teams, Real Salt Lake began its competitive activities in 2005. The major milestone in the club's history was winning the MLS Cup in 2009, when it defeated Los Angeles Galaxy on penalties, the only national title for the team to date. The club also contested the Copa Libertadores final in 2011, becoming the first and to date the only MLS team to reach the continental tournament final, being defeated by Independiente. Real Salt Lake plays its home matches at America First Field, in Sandy, and is recognized for its investment in youth development.
