Red Star Belgrade 1991

Red Star Belgrade 1991 was the European Champions Cup champion after beating Olympique Marseille on penalties and, months later, world champion after defeating Colo-Colo in Japan. Coached by Ljupko Petrović, it featured Dejan Savićević, Robert Prosinečski and Siniša Mihajlović.

History

On May 29, 1991, at the San Nicola Stadium in Bari, Red Star Belgrade drew 0-0 with Olympique Marseille and won the European Cup final 5-3 on penalties. It was the first European title for the club and the only one for a Yugoslav team in the competition, besides Partizan, runners-up in 1966, and Red Star Belgrade, which won it. The team was coached by Ljupko Petrović and brought together a talented generation, with Dejan Savićević, Robert Prosinečski and Siniša Mihajlović. The squad also won the Yugoslav Championship that season. In December 1991, in Tokyo, the club defeated Colo-Colo from Chile 3-0 in the Intercontinental Cup and was crowned world champion. Shortly after, the disintegration of Yugoslavia and the wars in the region disbanded that squad.
