Rio Cricket and Athletic Association

Rio Cricket and Athletic Association

Traditional sports club from Rio de Janeiro, founded by members of the British community, one of the oldest sports clubs in Brazil. It played a pioneering role in Rio football in the early twentieth century.

History

Founded in 1872 by British residents in Rio de Janeiro, Rio Cricket and Athletic Association was born as a cricket club, one of the sports brought by English residents living in the city. Over the decades, the club embraced other sports, including football, which was then in its introduction and popularization phase in the country. The club's historical highlight came in 1906, when it became champion of the first official edition of the Campeonato Carioca, organized by the Metropolitan Football League. This title is remembered as one of the initial milestones of organized football in Rio de Janeiro, a period when British clubs and clubs formed by Brazilians competed for sports hegemony in the city. With the rise of clubs such as Fluminense, Botafogo, Flamengo and América, which invested heavily in football in the following decades, Rio Cricket gradually lost its prominence in the sport and returned to concentrate its activities on sports such as cricket, tennis and rowing, remaining to this day a social and recreational club.
