History
The club was founded in 1907, in the Bergeborbeck neighborhood of Essen, and adopted the name Rot-Weiss Essen in 1923. For decades, it hosted its matches at the Georg-Melches-Stadion on Hafenstraße, and today plays at Stadion Essen, inaugurated in 2012 at the same location. The club's peak occurred in the 1950s. In 1953, Rot-Weiss Essen won the German Cup (DFB-Pokal) by defeating Alemannia Aachen 2-1 in the final. In 1955, the team won the German championship by defeating 1. FC Kaiserslautern 4-3 in the final. Helmut Rahn, who months earlier had scored the winning goal for Germany in the 1954 World Cup final, was the main reference of the team. Having been German champions, Rot-Weiss Essen participated in the first edition of the European Champions Cup in 1955-56, being eliminated by Hibernian in the initial phase. In the following decades, the club moved between lower divisions, and striker Horst Hrubesch played for the team in the 1970s before shining at Hamburg.
