Rubin Kazan is the main football club in the city of Kazan, capital of Tatarstan, in Russia. Founded in 1958, it won the Russian Championship in 2008 and 2009 and the Russian Cup in 2011-12.

History

Rubin Kazan was founded on April 20, 1958 and, in its early years, was called Iskra, a name used from 1958 to 1964. The club also operated as Rubin-TAN between 1992 and 1993, before establishing itself as Rubin. The most successful period began in the second half of the 2000s. Rubin was the Russian Premier League champion in 2008 and won again in 2009, breaking the hegemony of the major clubs from Moscow and Saint Petersburg and leading the team to the UEFA Champions League. In 2011-12, the club won the Russian Cup, its main title in national cups. These years transformed Rubin into one of the strongest teams in Russia and put Kazan on the map of European football. The club plays its matches at Kazan Arena, also called Ak Bars Arena, whose construction began in 2010 and ended in 2013. The stadium has a capacity of approximately 45,000 spectators and hosted matches from the 2018 World Cup, including Belgium's victory over Brazil in the quarter-finals.
