History
Sampaio Corrêa Football Club was founded on March 11, 1923, in São Luís, and was named in honor of Maranhão engineer and politician Antônio Sampaio Corrêa. The nickname Bolívia Querida arose from a popular carnival march in the 1930s, adopted by the supporters. In the state arena, the club established itself as one of the forces of the Maranhão Championship, accumulating dozens of titles and playing historic classics against Moto Club and Maranhão Athletic Club. The rivalry with Moto Club is considered the biggest classic in Maranhão football. At the national level, Sampaio Corrêa had its period of greatest prominence in the 2010s, when it rose to Series B of the Brazilian Championship after winning the Series C title in 2012, achieved in the final against Icasa. The club remained in the second national division for several seasons. Sampaio also competed in the Copa do Nordeste in several editions, reaching the tournament final, and participated in the Brazilian Cup in different years, eliminating clubs from higher divisions in some matches. Nhozinho Santos, its historic sports facility, is one of the most traditional stadiums in the North-Northeast region and home to the club's main matches in the state championship.
