History

The club was founded in 1994 as one of the original members of the MLS and made its debut in the league in 1996 under the name San Jose Clash. In 1999 it changed its name to San Jose Earthquakes, a name inherited from a team of the former NASL in the 1970s and 1980s. In the early 2000s, the team experienced its most successful period, with MLS Cup victories in 2001 and 2003. Players such as Landon Donovan and Dwayne De Rosario were central figures during this phase, and the team also won the Supporters' Shield in 2005. After a franchise hiatus in 2006 and 2007, the club returned to the league in 2008. In 2012 it won the Supporters' Shield again, and in 2015, it inaugurated the current stadium, now called PayPal Park.
