Santo André 2004
Santo André of 2004 achieved the greatest title in the club's history: the Copa do Brasil, defeating Flamengo in the final. The campaign guaranteed the ABC Paulista team a spot in the 2005 Copa Libertadores.
History
Esporte Clube Santo André was founded in 1967, in the city of Santo André in the state of São Paulo, and played their matches at Bruno José Daniel Stadium. For decades, the club had a modest presence on the national scene. In 2004, the team made a historic campaign in the Copa do Brasil. Despite not being one of the major clubs in Brazilian football, they eliminated traditional opponents and reached the final against Flamengo, which was one of the favorites for the title. In the final, Santo André outperformed the Rio de Janeiro team and won the trophy, the greatest achievement in their history. The title gave the club a spot in the 2005 Copa Libertadores, a tournament in which they competed in a continental competition for the first time. The 2004 conquest remains the main achievement of Ramalhão and one of the most remembered examples of a smaller club winning a national tournament in Brazil.
