History

In 1962, Santos Futebol Clube was at the peak of its victorious cycle of the 1960s, with an attacking lineup formed by Dorval, Mengálvio, Coutinho, Pelé and Pepe, a squad that became known as one of the most offensive in world football. In the 1962 Copa Libertadores, Santos overcame Peñarol in the final. Each team won one of the first two matches, and the title was decided in an extra match played in Buenos Aires, won by Santos 3-0. It was the club's first continental title. In the Copa Intercontinental that same year, Santos faced Benfica, the European champion. They won the first match at Maracanã 3-2 and thrashed the second match in Lisbon 5-2, with three goals from Pelé, and won the world title. On the national stage, the team was also champion of the Taça Brasil in 1962, the second of a sequence of five consecutive conquests (1961-1965), and of the Campeonato Paulista in 1962. The team's coach in the Libertadores campaign was Lula.
