The 1963 Santos was one of the most celebrated teams in the history of Brazilian football. Led by Pelé, it won the Copa Libertadores and the Intercontinental Cup in the same year and also won the Taça Brasil.

History

The 1963 Santos was the peak of the generation that dominated South American football in the early 1960s. The team, managed by Lula, had Pelé as its main star and featured players such as Gylmar dos Santos Neves, Zito, Mengálvio, Dorval, and Pepe. In the 1963 Copa Libertadores, Santos defended the title won in 1962 and reached the final again, where it defeated Boca Juniors and confirmed the two-time continental championship. In the same year, the club played the Intercontinental Cup against AC Milan from Italy. After each side won one of the two matches, Santos won the playoff match 1-0 at the Maracanã and became two-time world intercontinental club champions. The team also won the Taça Brasil in 1963, a competition that Santos won from 1961 to 1965. The 1963 campaign helped consolidate the nickname 'Golden Squad' given to Santos in that decade.
