History

Santos in 1965 belongs to the period when the club dominated Brazilian and South American football, with Pelé, Coutinho, Gilmar, Mengálvio and Zito among the main names in the squad. The coastal São Paulo team had already won the Copa Libertadores in 1962 and 1963 and the Intercontinental Cup in those same years. In 1965, Santos won the Brazil Cup, a national competition disputed in a knockout system among the state champions. The title was the club's fifth consecutive title in the competition, following victories in 1961, 1962, 1963 and 1964, and today is recognized by the CBF as a Brazilian championship title. In the same year, the team was also champion of the 1965 Paulista Championship, reinforcing the hegemony it had built in the 1960s. The formation is remembered as one of the most victorious in the history of Brazilian club football.
