O Santos de 1973 foi campeão paulista em título dividido com a Portuguesa, depois que o árbitro Armando Marques encerrou a disputa de pênaltis por engano. Foi a última conquista de Pelé pelo clube.
Santos 1973
Santos in 1973 won Pelé's last title with the club, the São Paulo Championship that year, shared with Portuguesa after one of the most confusing decisions in the history of Brazilian football.
History
In 1973, Santos still had Pelé as its main player, alongside Clodoaldo, Carlos Alberto Torres and Edu, remnants of the generation that dominated world football in the previous decade. The team competed in the São Paulo Championship as one of the favorites and reached the final against Portuguesa. The decision, played at Morumbi, ended 0-0 and went to a penalty shootout. Referee Armando Marques incorrectly ended the penalty series, with Portuguesa in the lead, believing the series was already decided. Faced with the error, the São Paulo Football Federation decided to declare both clubs champions. It was Pelé's last title with the Santos shirt. The King said goodbye to the club in 1974, ending a cycle that began in 1956 and yielded ten São Paulo titles, six Brazil Cups, five Rio-São Paulo Tournaments, two Libertadores and two World Cups. The 1973 team thus marks the transition between the victorious Santos of the 1960s and the rebuilding period the club experienced after Pelé's departure.
