Santos 1998
The Santos of 1998 won the Copa CONMEBOL by defeating Rosario Central, from Argentina. The title returned to the club an international trophy after more than three decades.
History
Santos Football Club was founded on April 14, 1912, in the city of Santos (SP). It gained worldwide recognition in the 1950s and 1960s, with Pelé, and won the Copa Libertadores and the Intercontinental Cups in 1962 and 1963. After that period, the club went through a long stretch without major international achievements. The 1990s were years of rebuilding, with the team returning to compete in continental tournaments. In 1998, Santos competed in the Copa CONMEBOL and reached the final against Rosario Central, from Argentina. The Santos club lifted the trophy, its first international title since the Intercontinental Cups of the Pelé era. The achievement was important for the club's prestige recovery, as it would go on to become Brazilian champion in 2002 and 2004.
