The team came from titles in the Campeonato Paulista and Copa do Brasil in 2010. Under the command of Muricy Ramalho, the team competed in the 2011 Copa Libertadores and reached the final against Peñarol, from Uruguay. After a 0-0 draw at Estádio Centenario in Montevideo, they won the second leg 2-1 at Pacaembu and became continental champions again, the club's third title after 1962 and 1963. In the same year, Santos also won the Campeonato Paulista. In December 2011, in Japan, Santos defeated Kashiwa Reysol 3-1 in the FIFA Club World Cup semi-final, but lost the final to Barcelona 4-0, with goals from Messi (twice), Xavi and Fàbregas.
