Santos FC
Santos Football Club is one of the most traditional clubs in Brazil, founded on April 14, 1912 in the city of Santos, São Paulo. It was Pelé's club and won the world club championship and Copa Libertadores three times in the 1960s era.
History
Santos was founded on April 14, 1912 by Raimundo Marques, Argemiro de Souza Júnior and Mário Ferraz de Campos, and began playing its matches at Vila Belmiro, which opened in 1916. For decades it was a club of regional significance, until Pelé's arrival in 1956. With Pelé, who played for the club until 1974, Santos experienced its golden era. The team won the Taça Brasil from 1961 to 1965, won the Copa Libertadores in 1962 and 1963, and was world club champion in those same two years, defeating Benfica in 1962 and AC Milan in 1963. The club also won the Torneio Roberto Gomes Pedrosa in 1968 and, in the 2000s, the Brazilian Championships in 2002 and 2004, completing a total of eight national titles recognized by the CBF. Between 2009 and 2013 a new generation, featuring Neymar, Ganso and Robinho, led Santos to the Copa do Brasil in 2010 and its third Copa Libertadores title in 2011, 48 years after the previous one. In 2023 Santos was relegated for the first time in its history, and in 2024 achieved promotion back to Series A.
