São Paulo 1943-1949
The São Paulo Football Club from the second half of the 1940s became known as the Steel Squadron. The team won five São Paulo State Championship titles between 1943 and 1949 and marked the club's first great era.
History
The São Paulo Football Club was founded in 1930 and reorganized in 1935. In the 1940s, the club began playing its matches at the Pacaembu Municipal Stadium, inaugurated in 1940, and assembled a squad that dominated football in São Paulo. The arrival of Leônidas da Silva, the Black Diamond, in 1942, was the period's great reinforcement. Alongside players like Waldemar de Brito, the tri-color attack became one of the most feared in the country and gave rise to the nickname Steel Squadron. Between 1943 and 1949, São Paulo won the São Paulo State Championship five times: 1943, 1945, 1946, 1948, and 1949. It was the club's first sequence of major titles and consolidated the tri-color supporters in São Paulo's capital. This period helped transform São Paulo into one of the main forces in Brazilian football and paved the way for achievements in the following decades, such as the São Paulo State Championship titles in 1953 and 1957 and the construction of Morumbi Stadium.
