History
São Paulo arrived at 1986 as one of the major clubs in São Paulo football, but still without a Brazilian title. The season was led by coach Pepe, former Santos winger, and brought together players such as Careca and Müller. The 1986 Brazilian Championship was disputed by 80 clubs and had long knockout phases. São Paulo reached the final against Guarani, and Careca finished as the competition's top scorer, with 25 goals. The final ended tied 3-3, and São Paulo won on penalties 4-3. The result gave the club its first Brazilian champion title. Careca left the club in 1987 to play for Napoli, in Italy.
