São Paulo 2021

São Paulo in 2021, coached by Hernán Crespo, became São Paulo state champions by defeating Palmeiras in the final. The title ended 16 years without the state championship and a trophy drought that dated back to the 2012 Copa Sudamericana.

History

São Paulo began 2021 under pressure after losing the 2020 Brasileirão in the final stretch. Argentine Hernán Crespo was hired in February to rebuild the team. In the São Paulo State Championship, Tricolor reached the final against Palmeiras, then Copa Libertadores champions. After a goalless draw at Allianz Parque, they won 2-0 at Morumbi, with goals from Luan and Gabriel Sara, and claimed the state title for the first time since 2005. In the Copa Libertadores, São Paulo reached the quarter-finals and was eliminated precisely by Palmeiras: a 1-1 draw at Morumbi and a 3-0 defeat at Allianz Parque. With a decline in performance in the Brasileirão, Crespo was dismissed in October 2021 and Rogério Ceni returned to take charge. The club finished the Brazilian Championship in 13th place.
