São Paulo Athletic Club

São Paulo Athletic Club

Founded by British immigrants, São Paulo Athletic Club is considered Brazil's oldest football club and the birthplace of the sport's introduction in the country through Charles Miller. Today it functions as a social and sports club, with no professional football.

History

São Paulo Athletic Club was founded in 1888 by members of the British community based in São Paulo, initially as a club focused on cricket and other English sports. In 1894, member Charles Miller returned from England bringing balls, uniforms, and the official rules of football, introducing the sport to Brazil precisely through SPAC. At the turn of the 20th century, the club was one of the founders of the Liga Paulista de Football in 1901, and dominated the first editions of the Campeonato Paulista, then disputed in a strictly amateur regime by teams linked to foreign communities and the São Paulo elite. SPAC won state titles in 1902, 1903, 1904, 1907, 1908, 1909, 1911, 1913, and 1916, a period in which it rivaled clubs such as Mackenzie and Paulistano. With the popularization of football and the professionalization of the sport from the 1930s onwards, clubs of foreign origin such as SPAC lost ground to popular associations and began to compete only in amateur competitions or abandoned high-level football. São Paulo Athletic Club followed this path, remaining active as a multi-sport social club. Currently, SPAC preserves its historic headquarters and its centennial identity, being remembered mainly for its foundational role in the history of Brazilian football, and no longer for competing at a professional level.
