History
Sporting Club de Bastia was founded in 1905 in the city of Bastia, on the island of Corsica, and established itself as the greatest Corsican club, playing its matches at Stade Armand Cesari in Furiani. Its peak came in the 1977-78 season, when it orchestrated a memorable campaign in the UEFA Cup, eliminating opponents such as Torino and Grasshopper until reaching the final, which was lost to PSV Eindhoven. The team featured Dutch star Johnny Rep and midfielder Claude Papi. In 1981, Bastia won the French Cup, defeating Saint-Étienne coached by Michel Platini in the final, the greatest title in its history. In the following decades it alternated between Ligue 1 and lower divisions, including a refoundation after serious financial troubles in the 2010s, later returning to professional football in Ligue 2.
