SC Freiburg

SC Freiburg

German club founded in 1904, a reference in sustainable management, youth development and technical stability. Nicknamed Breisgau-Brasilianer for the offensive football played in the 1990s.

History

Sport-Club Freiburg was founded in 1904, in the city of Freiburg im Breisgau, in southwestern Germany. For decades it circulated through regional divisions until establishing itself in professional German football. The historic turnaround came under the command of Volker Finke, the club's coach between 1991 and 2007, one of the longest tenures in the history of German football. With Finke, Freiburg rose to the Bundesliga in 1993 and, in the 1994-95 season, achieved a surprising third place, playing offensive football that earned the team the nickname Breisgau-Brasilianer. Between 2012 and 2024, the club experienced another era of stability with manager Christian Streich. During this period, Freiburg reached the German Cup final in 2022, lost on penalties to RB Leipzig, and regularly competed in European competitions. The club is recognized for its academy, which developed important names in German football, and for its balanced management model. Joachim Löw, world champion as Germany's coach in 2014, is the club's all-time leading scorer as a player.
