History
Sport Club Rio Grande was founded on July 19, 1900, becoming Brazil's oldest active football club. Created through the initiative of English and Brazilian citizens in the city of Rio Grande, on the banks of the Patos Estuary, in the far south of Rio Grande do Sul, the club emerged amid the effervescence of football that was arriving in Brazil at the end of the nineteenth century. For decades, Rio Grande competed regularly in Rio Grande do Sul state championships, representing the southern region of the state in state competitions. Although it never won the Rio Grande do Sul State Championship, the club remained active for more than 120 years, preserving its unique history and tradition in Brazilian football. The longevity of Sport Club Rio Grande is its greatest achievement. Surviving financial crises, world wars and profound transformations in Brazilian football, the club symbolizes resistance and passion for the sport in its purest and most historical form. Currently the club competes in the lower divisions of Rio Grande do Sul football, keeping alive the flame of an institution that has witnessed the entire history of Brazilian football since its origin, being a national sports heritage.
