History

Sheffield Football Club was founded on October 24, 1857, at Parkfield House, in the Highfield district, by Nathaniel Creswick and William Prest. The club's greatest contribution to the sport came early: the Sheffield Rules, defined at an assembly in October 1858 and published in 1859, were the first detailed set of football rules published by a club. Sheffield followed this own code for years and only officially adopted the Football Association rules in 1878. The club proposed the creation of the FA Amateur Cup, inaugurated in 1893, and won the competition in 1904. In 2004 it received the FIFA Order of Merit, an honor also given to Real Madrid, and in 2007, on its 150th anniversary, it entered the English Football Hall of Fame. Since 2001 the club has owned the Coach & Horses Ground, in Dronfield, Derbyshire. In 2025/26 it competed in the United Counties League Premier Division North, in the ninth division of English football.
