Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday is one of the oldest clubs in the world, founded in 1867. A four-time English champion and three-time FA Cup winner, it plays its home games at the historic Hillsborough stadium.

History

Founded on September 4, 1867 from a cricket club, Sheffield Wednesday is one of the oldest professional football clubs in the world. The unusual name comes from the day of the week on which the original club's members played their matches. The club's peak came in the first half of the twentieth century: it was English champion in 1903, 1904, 1929 and 1930, and also won the FA Cup in 1896, 1907 and 1935. Its stadium, Hillsborough, opened in 1899, is one of the most traditional in England and was sadly marked by the tragedy of 1989, which claimed the lives of 97 Liverpool supporters and forever changed the safety of English stadiums. In the modern era, Wednesday was one of the founders of the Premier League in 1992 and won the English League Cup in 1991, defeating Manchester United in the final at Wembley. It featured players like Chris Waddle and Paolo Di Canio in the 1990s, but since the end of the decade it has lived between the second and third divisions, maintaining one of the most loyal fan bases in the country.
