Palmeiras Sports Society

Palmeiras Sports Society

Palmeiras Sports Society is the official full name of the São Paulo club founded in 1914, one of the teams with the most titles in Brazilian football. Originally called Palestra Itália, it adopted its current name in 1942.

History

Founded on August 26, 1914 by Italian immigrants in São Paulo with the name Palestra Itália, the club had to change its name in September 1942, during World War II, when the Brazilian government prohibited references to Axis countries in civil entities — thus the name Palmeiras emerged. In the 1950s, the club formed the so-called 'Football Academy', a squad revered for its technical quality, featuring names like Ademir da Guia. In the following decades, Palmeiras remained among São Paulo's top clubs, going through periods of reconstruction after the so-called 'drought' of the 1970s and 1980s. In the Parmalat sponsorship era, in the 1990s, the club rose again to lift national trophies and won its first Copa Libertadores in 1999, under the command of Luiz Felipe Scolari. From 2014 onwards, with the opening of Allianz Parque, the club began a new winning cycle, accumulating multiple titles in the Campeonato Brasileiro, Copa Libertadores (2020 and 2021) and Copa do Brasil, establishing itself as one of the country's most successful teams in the 21st century.
