Founded in 1888, Sparta Rotterdam holds the title of the oldest professional football club in the Netherlands. Emerging in the full Victorian era of European sport, the club was instrumental in the development and popularization of football in Holland, influencing generations of practitioners and clubs. In its first fifty years of existence, Sparta won six Dutch Championship titles, with the last one dating back to 1959. The club was dominant in the amateur era and during the transition to professionalism, forming legendary teams that marked the history of Dutch football. Het Kasteel — The Castle — has been the club's stadium since 1916, becoming one of Holland's most historic grounds. The stadium, named to match the team's nickname, is a landmark of football in Rotterdam, a city that also hosts Feyenoord. In the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, Sparta oscillated between the Eredivisie and the Eerste Divisie, but always maintained its identity and historical pride. The club continues to play in the Eredivisie and represents tradition and longevity as its greatest assets.
