Sport Club Germânia
Historic club from Porto Alegre, linked to the German-Brazilian community of the early twentieth century, known mainly for its role in the origin of Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense.
History
Sport Club Germânia originated from the football section of a recreational and sports club in Porto Alegre dedicated to the German-origin community in the city in the early twentieth century. At that time, it was common for clubs formed by European immigrants and their descendants to restrict membership participation to those belonging to the same colony. This restriction played a direct role in the founding of Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense, on September 15, 1903: historical accounts widely disseminated by Grêmio itself indicate that Cândido Dias da Silva and other football enthusiasts, prevented from playing at the German community club because they did not belong to it, decided to found a new association open to all. With the rise of anti-German sentiment during World War I, clubs linked to the German colony in Rio Grande do Sul underwent name and profile changes over the following decades, reflecting the political context of the time. Although today it is remembered mainly for its symbolic place in the history of Grêmio's founding, Sport Club Germânia is cited by historians of Rio Grande do Sul football as an important part of the early days of the sport in Porto Alegre.
