Sport Club Internacional

Sport Club Internacional

Internacional is a traditional club from Porto Alegre, known for winning the Libertadores Cup and the Club World Cup in 2006, as well as for its rivalry with Grêmio.

History

Founded in 1909 by José Poppe and a group of friends, Internacional was born with the proposal of being a club open to players of different nationalities, unlike other clubs of the era. The club built a solid tradition in Gaucho and Brazilian football throughout the 20th century, winning state championships and the Brazilian Championship in 1975, 1976, 1979, and 2020. The most significant moment in recent history came in 2006, when Internacional won the Libertadores Cup and subsequently defeated Ronaldinho's Barcelona in the FIFA Club World Cup final, one of the greatest achievements in Brazilian football at the time. The club plays its matches at the Beira-Rio Stadium, on the banks of the Guaíba River, and maintains a strong regional rivalry with Grêmio in the traditional Grenal.
