History

The club originated from the Sociedade Esportiva do Comercial Clube, the sports sector of the Sociedade Recreativa Comercial Clube. Upon becoming an independent entity, it became known as Sport Club Juiz de Fora on September 24, 1916. The stadium began to be built after the club's foundation. A first version was inaugurated on May 1, 1921, with the visit of Botafogo from Rio de Janeiro, and the current stadium was inaugurated on September 28, 1947, on Avenida Rio Branco. On October 12, 1920, the club was the first in Minas Gerais to face Fluminense. In the local scene, Periquito was city champion of Juiz de Fora 13 times and won the City League's Opening Tournament six times. In 1987 it competed in the main division of the Minas Gerais Championship and was runner-up in the state's Second Division. The club also became known for its social structure, which includes, according to records, the first suspended swimming pool in Latin America, and for president Francisco Queiroz Caputo, who remained in office for 55 consecutive years. Currently the professional team is not active.
