Sport Club Mangueira

Sport Club Mangueira was a Rio de Janeiro club from Tijuca, founded in 1906 and defunct in 1927. It entered Brazilian football history after suffering a devastating 24-0 defeat to Botafogo on May 30, 1909.

History

Sport Club Mangueira emerged in 1906, in Rio de Janeiro, founded by workers from the Mangueira Hat factory. Based in Tijuca, in the northern zone of the city, the club played in a striped shirt in red and black with white shorts, which earned it the nickname Rubro-Negro Tijucano. The club's field was located on Rua Desembargador Isidro, in an area today partially occupied by Tijuca Tennis Club. On May 30, 1909, in the Rio de Janeiro Championship, Mangueira lost 24-0 to Botafogo, on the field at Rua Voluntários da Pátria, playing with ten players. The score is noted as the largest thrashing in official competitions recognized by state federations in Brazilian football. Despite the notoriety linked to that defeat, Mangueira continued playing in Rio's football for more than a decade, until ceasing operations in 1927.
