Sport Club do Recife
Sport Club do Recife is one of the most traditional clubs in northeastern and Brazilian football. Founded in 1905, the Lion of the Island is the only Pernambuco club to have won the Brazilian Championship, an achievement reached in 1987.
History
Founded on May 13, 1905 by students from Ginásio Pernambucano, Sport Club do Recife is the oldest club in Pernambuco still in operation. Its stadium, Ilha do Retiro, is one of the most traditional in the Brazilian northeast, located on a fluvial island in the Capibaribe River. The greatest moment in red-black history was the title of the 1987 Brazilian Championship, won controversially after the case of the 'Expresso da Vitória', when the CBF declared Sport champion after Flamengo and Fluminense refused to dispute the final phase. Despite the controversies, the title is officially recognized. In the regional scene, Sport is four-time champion of the Northeastern Cup and has dozens of titles from the Pernambuco Championship. The club also has a tradition of revealing talents for national and international football. Sport's fans, known as the Young Supporters of Sport, are among the most passionate in the northeast. The classic match with Náutico, called the 'Classic of Multitudes', is one of the fiercest in the region.
