St Johnstone Football Club

St Johnstone Football Club

Scottish club based in Perth, known for winning its two main national titles in the 2010s and 2020s, breaking the hegemony of Glasgow's major clubs.

History

Founded in 1884, St Johnstone is the main club in the city of Perth, Scotland. It played its matches for decades at the old Muirton Park before moving, in 1989, to McDiarmid Park, the first brand-new stadium built from scratch in modern Britain. For most of its history, the club alternated between the elite and lower divisions of Scottish football, without winning any major national titles. This scenario changed in 2014, when St Johnstone won the Scottish Cup for the first time in its history, defeating Dundee United in the final. The club's peak came in the 2020-21 season, under the command of manager Callum Davidson, when St Johnstone won the Scottish League Cup and, a few months later, the Scottish Cup again, becoming the first club outside the Celtic-Rangers duo to win both competitions in the same season since Aberdeen in 1990.
