In the 1980s, under the command of Emerich Jenei, it formed one of the strongest teams in the country, dominating national football. In the 1985–86 season, the club won the Romanian championship and the Romanian Cup, and advanced to the final of the European Cup against Barcelona. The final took place on May 7, 1986, at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán stadium in Seville. The match ended 0–0 after extra time and went to penalties, won by Steaua 2–0, with goalkeeper Helmuth Duckadam saving all four Barcelona penalty kicks.
