History

Stockport County was founded in 1883 under the name Heaton Norris Rovers, and adopted its current name in 1890. The nickname The Hatters comes from the city's tradition in the hat industry. The club played its home games at Edgeley Park and won the Third Division North title in 1921-22, the first edition of the division, and again in 1936-37. In the 1990s, Stockport experienced its best period, reaching the semi-finals of the English League Cup in 1996-97 and competing in the English second division between 1997 and 2002. After falling to the National League, the club was champion of the division in 2021-22 and, in 2023-24, won the League Two title, returning to League One.
